Alex McLeish has praised the attitude and response of the middle of Birmingham Lee Bowyer losing your first point of team earlier in the season.

He lost his seat during the current campaign to Craig Gardner, which currently is the Club's top scorer with four goals but the ankle injury Gardner won Bowyer a pardon-and he responded by scoring the winner against Chelsea in the last weekend of Santo André.

"His goal was the trademark of Lee Bowyer, from the type of plays he has done throughout his career," said McLeish.

Bowyer partnered impressive season with Barry Ferguson on ensuring Blues finished ninth in his first season in the Barclays Premier League.

McLeish said: "it's hard to keep everyone happy and guys like Lee Bowyer, Kevin Phillips, Matt Derbyshire and David Murphy want to play.

"Lee hit on my door at the beginning when Gardner took its place.

"Is great in a way that players didn't do that because you wouldn't get the hassle.

"But if you have players who don't want to play, you are really struggling.

"Lee wasn't very pleased to be left out, but he has knuckled down, trained hard and never put a foot wrong against Chelsea.

Bowyer scored six times in the last season, but his goal against Chelsea, was his first for 11 months.
