Lilly, giant national football team, retiring at 39

Kristine Lilly, arguably one of the biggest female football players the world ever, is retiring from the game.
The average American 39-year-old scored a world record playing 352 times for the U.S. women's team.

She is the only player to participate at the World Championships of all five women, helping the American victory in 1991 and ' 99. Lilly played in three Olympic teams, winning the gold medal in 1996 and 2004.
The Wilton, Connecticut, native, starred at the University of North Carolina and was called to the u.s. team when she was 16.
Outside the field Lilly was shy and quiet, but in the field, she was a tough player with a thunderous. She also was a specialist in free. Lilly carved 130 goals and 105 assists American team, only second to Mia Hamm.

"I decided to retire from football game," Lilly said on its website (kristinelilly13. com) today. "It is time! I want to first thank all the fans for the support they gave me, cheering for me in the stands, watching and yelling at the TV, to the good I have gotten emails from many of you over the years. "

Lilly stepped away from the game to have a child in 2008, but returned to the national team last year, helping Americans to qualify for the World Cup this summer in Germany.
She played professionally for the Boston breakers on WUSA and WPS.

In 2006, Kristine Lilly was named the MVP of the three national tournaments, but it was forgotten by World Player award women FIFA.

Lilly "Has been a most amazing journey and one that began when he was six years old in my small town of Wilton, Connecticut," he said. "My favorite thing about football at that time were orange slices in half the time and I can honestly say that I'll lose the slices of orange but above all I will miss my friends and the comfort that the football field gave me."
