Vigil set for football coach today Stratford injured in the assault

A 33-year-old man who police said was assaulted by her husband of a woman on Friday remained in critical condition Sunday from injuries sustained after he was drilled and fell, striking his head on the floor.

Houston police didn't say what, if any, relationship there was between the woman and the man now in an intensive care unit of the hospital.

Police said that her husband, Ronald Lee Newman, 51, he saw his wife with another man, Christopher Matthews, in the parking lot of a restaurant on the block 14030 Memorial Drive about 11 hours Friday.

Newman was charged with aggravated assault, accused of beating Matthews, who fell unconscious, and was transported to the Ben Taub General Hospital, on Saturday, said Houston Police spokesman John Cannon.

Matthews is the girls ' football coach at Stratford High School and a professor of world history. Spring Branch ISD provided advice for students and families Sunday afternoon in high school.

A prayer vigil for Matthews and his family is set for 6 p.m. today at Grace Presbyterian Church, 10221 Ella Lee Lane, one block north of Beltway 8 and intersection of Westheimer.

"Our focus now continues to be the well-being of the coach Matthews, supporting your family, your players and students," the District said in a statement. "Out of respect for the family and the well-being of everyone, we ask that everyone continue to support the coach Matthews, his family and our students."
